Outline plans for work for the Summer Term 2010

The topic the children will be studying this term is called “Water and the Seaside”. We will be using a variety of books, games, puzzles, small play and IT material as a basis for our work. We will be working towards the goals set out for the Foundation Stage which follow on from the tasks the children have already covered in their first two Reception Terms.
The main areas of study are as follows:

Literacy
There will be regular literacy groups where we look at phonics and whole words on flashcards, on the whiteboard and through games. The children need to know all 26 letter sounds and many blends and digraphs such as sh, ch, oo, ee, ar, er, igh and air. They will continue to read to us several times a week but it is also important that they look at other books at home and start reading words from these that they recognise or can word build. Please make sure your child has their reading bag in school every day. Alongside the reading and phonic work we will be encouraging all the children to produce their own writing. They should be able to sound out and spell simple words and begin to put these words into sentences. Where appropriate children will be encouraged to write several sentences and use full stops and capital letters. Whilst we have been concentrating on the sounds letters make we will also be teaching the names of letters and the order they appear in the alphabet.

Numeracy
Regular numeracy sessions will be held each week and the main emphasis will be to count, read, write and use the numbers to 20 correctly. The children will need to understand the value of these numbers using vocabulary such as more than and less than and be able to put these numbers in order. This will then lead to simple addition and subtraction work and work on doubles. Simple mental calculations will be asked at each session. We will also be looking at numbers above 20 on a 100 square and looking for patterns such as odds and evens and counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Practical work will include money, weighing, measuring and shape tasks which will build on the work already covered so far.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World
The children will learn about the properties of water, what we use it for and why it is important. Planting seeds will show the children how important water is to make things grow. We will also consider different ways of crossing water and what life would be like if we had little or no water. After half-term we will look more closely at the seaside and what can be found in the sea and on the beach.

A sense of place
The children will be learning geographical terms based on water in the environment. We will look at different areas of water such as ponds and lakes and will hope to visit South Hill Park to look at the lake there as well as the pond in Badgers Retreat. When studying the seaside we will make simple plans and maps and talk about characteristics of seaside areas such as beaches, cliffs and sand dunes.

A sense of time
We will be looking at how seaside resorts have changed over the years and how things would have looked different in the past such as the clothes people wore and the entertainment available then and now.

Art/DT/Music (Creative and Physical Development)
The children will use a variety of materials and will experience various techniques such as painting, printing, drawing, collage and 3D work. They will be encouraged to use tools correctly and carefully. Most work will be based on our topic with shape and pattern work linked to numeracy sessions. There will be weekly singing/music sessions with the children having access to a variety of instruments.

Cultures and Beliefs /PSME
Work will be concerned with ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changes’. We will be encouraging the children to understand what being fair means and how they can help if someone feels sad or left out. Later in the term we will begin to help the children understand the changes that will take place as they move from Reception into Year 1. Special words for the term will also be rights and responsibilities. The children will learn that their actions have an impact on everybody else either in a good or a bad way so they need to consider the choices they are making.

The children will use the computer as often as possible and will learn to use a variety of programs using the mouse and the keyboard. They will have a chance to use the camera and work with a remote controlled ‘BeeBot’ concentrating on directional work.

There will be time for free play indoors and outdoors each day.

Mental arithmetic is used most days. Parents can still help by playing board games and card games and asking any form of number questions to encourage these skills.
Reading at home is also very important. Please continue to share the reading books and help learn new words by encouraging your child to sound out unknown words or look for clues in the picture. Looking at other books including non-fiction books will also help your child make progress.

Should we have a problem with any aspect of your child’s behaviour or learning we will see you at the earliest opportunity after school to discuss a way forward.
We aim to make this another successful term for your child so they are ready to move into Year 1 in September. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Between us all we hope to make it a good term.

Trips
The Year group will be going on a visit to Milestones Museum in Basingstoke. This will further enhance the children’s understanding of what buildings were like long ago. Details about the trip will be forwarded later in the term.
SATs
During this term the children are:
assessed by the class teacher in English, Maths and Science
given written tests (SATs) in English and Maths
The tests are based upon the work that pupils cover in class. The tests are designed to fit in with normal classroom activities wherever possible.
You will be given full information of your child’s level of achievement in the SATs with your child’s school report. I have enclosed a description of the various levels which your child may achieve. These were discussed at the SAT meeting at the end of last term.
Books
We have had great difficulty finding the funds to replace lost or missing spelling and reading books. Please note that a charge of 50p will be requested if books are lost and need to be replaced.
Progress
The children are making very pleasing progress this year. Please continue to support your child with their Numeracy homework, spelling and reading. Help them to improve their handwriting by checking that capital letters stand tall and letters are joined appropriately.
Thank you for your continuing support,

Literacy planning is organised into three main blocks: narrative (plays and scripts), non–fiction and poetry. These blocks are further divided into suggested units of learning and teaching.
The number of units varies from year group to year group.

Year 4 will study the following units:

              Stories with issues and dilemmas
              Persuasive texts
Poetry – List poems and Imagery.
              Plays

Year 3 will study the following units:

More stories from Myths and Legends.
            Authors and letters
            Poems to Perform
            Dialogue and plays

· Year 3 - the children will be organised into Literacy groups,

· Phonic sessions running 3x per week for both year groups these will help the children extend and improve their spelling skills.
· Weekly handwriting themes will improve style and fluency.

Maths
Year 3 - the children will be organised into Numeracy groups,
Year 4 - the children will be taught in their class groups.
The children from both year groups will be organised into Number groups concentrating on improving their basic number skills running 3x per week.
Within the Primary framework we will focus particularly on: -

· Number skills involving the 4 rules
· Solving real life situations involving money
· Daily testing of mental skills and knowledge of tables
· Estimating and measuring length, mass, capacity and time
· Measuring the area of simple shapes and measuring angles
· Symmetry and reflection of shape
· Recognise and use fractions and decimals; find fractions of shapes and quantities
· Collect, classify and present data in charts, tables, graphs and diagrams

Science
Year 3
Magnets and Springs. This unit gives children experience of forces, including attraction and repulsion between magnets, compression and stretching of springs and stretching of elastic bands. They learn that these forces have direction and can vary in size. They also learn which materials are attracted to magnets.
Light and Shadow. This unit introduces the relationship between light, an object and the formation of shadows. Children observe the apparent movement of the Sun and the associated changes in shadows.

Year 4
Friction. In this unit children build on their existing knowledge of forces and learn that forces can be measured and compared. The unit focuses on friction as a force which exists between objects moving across solid surfaces and opposes motion, and the forces of air resistance and water resistance which oppose the motion of objects moving through air and water.

Habitats. Through this unit children will begin to understand the concept of a habitat, how it provides organisms found there with conditions for life and how animals depend on plants or other animals which eat plants for food. Throughout the unit ways in which organisms are suited to the habitat should be emphasised. The children will be visiting ‘The Lookout’ as part of their studies.

All units involve experimental and investigative work measuring and recording results, evaluating and processing information; ICT will be a vital constituent of this work.

History
Year 3
This term is devoted to the study of ‘Invaders of Britain – Anglo Saxons. By investigating finds, children learn about the work of archaeologists and about the culture and way of life of Anglo-Saxons who settled in Britain.

Year 4
The children will be studying ‘Ancient Egyptians’. The children will be studying life in Ancient Egypt. As part of their studies a visit to The British Museum has been arranged.

Geography
Year 3
The children will be studying our Local Area. This will involve visits to places around Birch Hill, The Lookout, South Hill Park etc. A letter giving more detail and asking for your permission will be sent to you in the near future.

Year 4
The children will be studying ‘How and where do we spend our time?’ Making the link between how and where children spend their leisure, recreation and working time. It develops the theme of settlement within the school's local area.
‘Improving the Environment’ - The children use the school buildings, grounds and immediate locality to investigate environmental issues and improvements. It encourages children to become actively involved in improving their local environment.

Religious Education
Year 3
The children will be studying Sikhism and what it means to be a Sikh.

Year 4
The children will be studying Hinduism and the values that are held in this religion.

Art
Year 3
The children will be thinking about the question Can we change places?’
In this unit children explore sculpture in public buildings and spaces. They explore and use shape, form, colour and pattern to make a maquette or model of a sculpture for a site in the school or the local area. They compare the ideas, methods and approaches used in the work of different sculptors.

Year 4
The children will be studying ‘Viewpoints.’ In this unit children explore how to convey the atmosphere and story of a dream. They explore different viewpoints in the school environment as a setting for their dream. They invent a number of characters who are photographed 'on location' and develop a narrative to describe the dream.

Technology
Year 3
The children will be working on a unit called ‘Moving Monsters’. This unit helps to develop children's understanding of control through investigating simple pneumatic systems and designing and making a model of a monster that has moving parts controlled by pneumatics. This could be linked to stories or poems, or another purpose the designing and making assignment requires children to develop skills in working as part of a team.

ICT
Year 3
E-Mail - In this unit children learn to use e-mail (electronic mail) to send
and receive messages. They learn about communicating over distances
and will consider and compare different methods of communication.

Year 4
Branching Databases - In this unit children learn about Branching databases and learn to use and create branching databases to sort and classify information.

Physical Education
Indoor
Year 3 - Gymnastics In this unit children create sequences that include changes of level and speed, and focus on using different body shapes clearly.
Yr 4 - Outdoor and adventurous activities. In this unit children learn how to read and follow different maps and symbol trails. They also take part in a range of trust and communication activities, and in some adventure games.
Outdoor - Athletics
Year 3 - In this unit children explore running, jumping and throwing activities, and take part in simple challenges and competitions. They experiment with different ways of travelling, throwing and jumping, increasing their awareness of speed and distance.
Year 4 - In this unit children concentrate on developing good basic running, jumping and throwing techniques. They are set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing.
Outdoor - Net and Wall games
Year 3 - In this unit children focus on developing the skills they need for net/wall games and on how to use these skills to make the game difficult for their opponent. They learn to direct the ball towards the target area and away from their opponent.

Music
Yr 3 - Class Orchestra-This unit develops children's ability to create, combine and perform.
Yr 4 - Salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard - Exploring singing games-This unit develops children's ability to recognise and explore some characteristics of singing games. It consolidates their sense of pulse and ability to perform with others. The children will be continuing to have their brass and woodwind lessons each week run by Berkshire Maestros, The Young Musicians Trust.

Home learning covering ‘Literacy’ and ‘Numeracy’ will be set for the children each week, given out on a Monday and to be returned on the following Monday.
