Ways of travelling to school - Bracknell Forest consultation
As required by government, the council has explained what it is doing to promote sustainable travel to school in a draft strategy document. The council are now seeking your views on the plans. The strategy can be found on the School Travel Plans page of the council web site, and the consultation will last until 14 December 2009. If you do not have time to read the whole document, section 4 sets out the aims and objectives of the strategy and the action plan at the end of the strategy sets out how the council intends to achieve these goals.
Book Week
Many adults and children had great fun in coming to school at the start of book week dressed as their favourite book characters. There were some fantastic costumes: many thanks to everyone who joined in the fun. The KS1 children enjoyed some great sessions with Perform and the KS2 children developed their writing skills with author Derek Smith. Thank you for supporting the Book Fair, which took £514 and we managed a special deal which gave us 100% commission which meant that we could add a lot of books to the library for the children to use. Also many thanks to Mrs Corbett, Mrs Stokes and Mrs Porter for helping with the Fair.
The Pinafore Pirates
Children in the Lower Junior team are busy rehearsing for their performance of The Pinafore Pirates. This is an ambitious play, with a lot of songs and words to learn, but the children have really risen to the challenge. The performances are on 24th & 25th March.
Song Of the Earth
Every two years or so, Bracknell primary schools get together to put on a performance that mixes singing and dancing. This year, on Sunday 28th March at the Bracknell Leisure Centre, children from Birch Hill will taking part in Song Of The Earth. A choir from this school will join the main choir and sing throughout the performance and the dance club have been allocated a song tow which they have to devise and perform a routine. As you can imagine, the children (and adults) have been working very hard to get ready for the performance. As well as the performance, some children have created a beautiful banner that illustrates one of the songs and will hang from the ceiling of the sports hall. The whole event should look and sound spectacular and I am really looking forward to seeing it.
PTA events
The PTA have arranged a film night for both Infants and Juniors, this time on the same night: March 12th. The infant children will be seeing their film in the studio and should be left at the door by Mrs Moss’s classroom at 6.00: collection is at 7.45. The juniors will be in the hall and should enter using the main entrance at 5.45 with collection at 8.00. Please arrive in plenty of time to collect your child: it’s a good idea to be a bit early as it’s difficult to be absolutely precise about the time of the end of the film!
There will be a Cake Sale on Friday 19th March at 3.30 in the main hall. Come along early to avoid disappointment!
Sport Relief
This year we will be supporting Sports Relief during the week beginning 15th March. The children are going to walk around the school field 4 times, which is about the distance of a mile (Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage will be walking half of this distance). Children will do this in their PE kits on the day they normally have their PE lesson: you will be getting a note from your class teacher indicating when they will be doing this. By making a donation of 50p, your child will be able to support Please note that if it is raining heavily, the walk will either be postponed or moved to the hall indoors!

London Marathon
Anouska Allen, who is Morgan Thompson’s mum (Y2) is taking part in this year’s London Marathon, raising money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She would really appreciate some support. You can go to her JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/Anouska-Allen. JustGiving sends your donation straight to National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. Ms Allen told me that from the age of 11 when she started running her dream has been to take part in the London Marathon and as someone who has been involved with children for most of her adult life, she is very keen to support the work of the NSPCC. We will also be collecting loose change around the time of the marathon to help her appeal, so watch out for the collection buckets.
Photo Success
Staff member Mt Brown has a photograph included in the exhibition of images from the 2009 Parks Photo Competition. It can be seen at the Community Gallery at South Hill Park as part of the Capturing our Natural World in Bracknell Forest exhibition which runs until 4th Apr 2010. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a great photo and many congratulations to Mr Brown. We benefit from his considerable photographic skills as he takes a lot of pictures around the school.
Lunch for Senior Citizens
Senior citizens are invited to have lunch with the children on a Wednesday: they will be made very welcome. Please phone the school office (455815) to book your place. The meal costs £2.50.
Happy Easter
Best wishes for a happy Easter.
