Kwik Cricket
There were two Kwik Cricket festivals recently, and Birch Hill entered a team in both events. Both teams enjoyed their matches and improved greatly as the days progressed. In fact the girls’ team were very unlucky not to reach the quarter finals, as they lost their last game by only 1 run. Many thanks to Ms Cameron and Miss Davidson for coaching the children and to former pupil Daniel Mitchell who helped train the children and accompanied the teams to the festivals. The teams were: Mixed Cricket- Iona King, Elizabeth Totkov, Chris Boardman, Ryan Isernia, Harvey Griffiths, Blake Searle, Jarrod Basson, Dylan Flier, Jay Sutton, Jack Linturn, Dominic Fulford, Ellis Hopley; Girls Cricket-Iona King, Hannah Goddard, Bethany Nicholls, Rebecca Farrell, Celine Saunders, Rebecca Harding, Abigail Edwards, Natalia Carter, Amy Croucher and Megan Southby
Athletics
Also competing recently were the athletics team. The Bracknell Athletics festival involved 20 schools and took in running, jumping, shot putt and throwing. Birch Hill did really well, coming 4th overall with 140 points. Jack Linturn won boys 600m race in a time of 1.52 and Elizabeth Totkov came first equal in the girls’ rounders ball throw, achieving 33m. Well done to them and all the team, who were: Ryan Isernia, Jack Linturn, Harvey Griffiths, Donovan Grant, Connor Drew, Sean Lamberth, Dylan Flier, Jarrod Basson, Megan Southby, Rebecca Harding, Bethany Nicholls, Hannah Goddard, Iona King, Elizabeth Totkov and Amy Croucher.
In the Junior Sports competition, the overall winners were Saturn. The fastest boy and girl were Jack Linturn and Beth Nicholls.
Food Fight
Following last year’s successful Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook assembly, this year children enjoyed Food Fight. This wasn’t quite as messy as it sounds, but was in fact a quiz between a team of teachers (Mrs Moss, Mr Hughes-White, Mr Thomas and Miss Hodge) and a team of pupils: Adam Clow, Ellen Panlillio, Rebecca Farrell and Owen Le. They had to answer questions designed to test their knowledge of healthy eating. The children won by a mile, with their superiority being underlined in the final round: decorating a cake. Owen Le’s cake-icing skills brought gasps of admiration from the audience.
Remembering Miss Wray
Children and staff have been thinking of ways in which the school can commemorate Miss Wray’s contribution. Amongst the suggestions: a tree and a brightly coloured shrub or bush (because, as one of her former pupils said “She liked bright colours”). It is also hoped that we will be able to hold a musical evening. Both the planting and concert will take place in the autumn and former pupils will be notified through their secondary schools.
Road Safety Quiz
Recently a group of enthusiastic supporters watched Emily Porter, Jodie Stokes, Bradley Todd and Kieran West take part in a Road Safety Quiz organised at Wooden Hill school by the Bracknell Forest Road Safety Team. The children (along with Francesca Whitehall and Luca Carrannante) had given up a number of lunchtimes to be taught about the highway code by Miss Hodge. The school team came third, missing out by only a few points. Well done to them!

Summer Fete
The fete this year was a tremendous success. The weather was absolutely wonderful and there were many stalls, attractions and arena events to thrill and entertain the many people who came. A lot of people attended the fete and overall, we raised £6,232 for PTA funds! Many thanks to everyone who came along to enjoy the day, and special thanks to the arena performers, the police and fire service. A lot of people worked extremely hard in many ways before, during and after the fete: a massive thank you goes out to all of them and also to Mrs Buckett and Ms Foggoa who organised the day, no doubt at the cost of some sleepless nights! It was a fantastic team effort. Thanks should also go to the staff who risked life and limb at Go Ape a few weeks ago: a terrifying ordeal, I can confirm!
One of the projects that the PTA will be funding is the redevelopment of the pergola in the playground. This collapsed during the snow. Children have already been asked for their ideas and the School Council will be drawing up plans early in the new school year.
Nursery Nautical Fun Day
The Nursery’s Annual Family Fun day had a nautical theme this year. Lots of children and adults enjoyed the many different games and activities that the staff had set up. Many children came in costumes with a nautical theme: mermaids and pirates were particularly popular. There were even two sharks!
